XMLnode and trademark symbol

I am using the following code to get the contents of my DCR.

$rootnode = TeamSite::XMLnode->new($xml);
#print $rootnode;
if ( defined $rootnode ) {
$emailNotificationDate = $rootnode->value("emailNotificationDate");
print $emailNotificationDate;
}

However, when emailNotificationDate contains a registered trademark (&#153 it returns the trademark(TM) and not ™.
When I try and right the same value back to the DCR the (TM) is getting put back into the DCR instead of the original ™.

I am doing a search and replace to replace other items like ampersands, and registered trademark symbols, but the registered trademark doesn't work the same.

Figured it out.

use HTML::Entities ();
$encoded = HTML::Entities::encode($emailNotificationDate);
print $encoded;

Searched for over an hour, then bang, minutes after posting found the solution.
