NULL in MSG_ID field

We have an odd issue that is 'breaking' the duplicate email detection. For a number of email imported (via Filesite) into Workspaces we find that the MSG_ID field in docmaster has the value of NULL. The consequence is that there are many duplicate emails in folders that should not be there. Has anyone else seen this issue, if so do you have any idea what set of circumstances cause this and how to resolve?
