WCM static publisher

I've heard that official support may cease at the end of calendar year 2012? Is that correct? Should I start to get my developers to look at upgrading and to what?

Are you referring to WebPublisher? If so, according to Powerlink (EMC Support website), the end of life is listed below

		WebPublisher 6.5 SP4	Windows		Service Pack	31-Dec-2012
		WebPublisher 6.5 SP6			Service Pack	30-Apr-2015

BTW - there is no upgrade path for WebPublisher. EMC decided to discountinue that product. I would speak to your EMC sales rep to see what your options are. I know that EMC has WCM partner, but that partner uses different technology than WebPublisher.
