Impact of addition of a new process variable on existing Process template

Hi Experts,

Can we add a process variable in existing process template which has many running workflows instances?

If Yes,

1. What would be impact on the running workflow instances?

2. Just creation of the intenal object for the new process variable for each workflow instances should be fine or any other points need to be taken care.

3. Is there any documentation which provide the details? If yes, please share the documentation.

Hi,

You should be able to modify workflow templates at any time, regardless whether there are running instances or not.

That said, it is strongly recommended to save the modified template as a new version If you're doing in that way,

your old workflow instances are running just fine, only the newly created instances will utilize the newly added SDT.

You are indeed able to halt all running instances, and resume these after you have modified your template, and saved it as same version. This is working fine in quite some scenarios, but I doubt that this is a very good idea in your case.

Bottomline is simply to save the template as a new version, and you're fine.

I understood the solution, however I would like to highlight that I am using this process in xCP and there are several forms and configuration involved. Would there be any issues with the relations between the process and the forms if we create a new version?

And if I want to keep the process version same and just create internal object for the new process variable for each workflow instances, should it be fine or any other points need to be taken care?

Is it highly recommended to create a new version not only for process but for Task forms also. In this case there should be any issues. At least as per my experience

And to the second part of your question.

If you create some internal objects for new process variable there is no guarantee that everything will be fine. I think some day you will meet some issues. I think it is cheaper in term of time (and money finally) just to create a new versions of processes and forms.

I do agree with Konstantin here, you're most likely to be better off with the clean approach.

If you can't resist trying, I would suggest that you create yourself a test workflow, and check out if you can get it running
