Adding Buttons to VFE

nipper

I am trying the example in VFE Devlopers Guide

I created an html page in iw-home/httpd/iw/ewebeditpro/glossary.html (attached)

These 2 lines are in the visualformat.cfg (in the appropriate spots):

<button command="glosslink" />

<cmd name="glosslink" key="world" />

The new button shows up, but nothing happens when pressed. I assume I am missing something.
Also, the manual tells me to test the html in a browser, which fails with js error eWebEditPro is undefined at line 7

When I get this working, my need to to take the selected text and replace it with some other text. I see
commands to copy select text into the clipboard, how can I get it into a variable ?

Tips/Pointers/RTFMs appreciated

Solaris 2.8, TS 6.5, example on page 40 to add a button to VFE toolbar.

TIA

Andy

Just a quick note that your HTML was not attached.

You won't get an RTFM from me; I find the VFE documentation to be lacking. With that said, do you have a JS function named glosslink? I believe that's what it's looking for. From what I can tell, you've placed a button there that refers to a function that does not yet exist.

sorry

THe JS is in the HTML, but I am not certain how to tell VFE to hit this HTML

Migrateduser

So, the JS is in some rendered HTML somewhere? I'm not sure I understand. What I'm thinking about is in ewebeditproevents.js, which it looks to by default (you may have customized your VFE to look to a different location, but it looks at this file OOTB).

Sorry, I just saw your attachment. Where are you storing that? Why not just include that in ewebeditproevents.js?

Why not just include that in ewebeditproevents.js?

Because line 4 says this:

/* It is best NOT to modify this file. */

I am uncertain that I am doing things properly and the manual is poor at best. I looked at
the Ektron site and it appears IW just took their manual & put an IW logo on it.

So I am really confused. The manual says to make a html file and drop it in the
ewebeditpro directory, which I did. But I do not know how to point the button to this
file

I don't know about the HTML file, either, but I typically ignore IW's suggestions and just edit the file anyway (after backing it up, of course). Besides, I don't think IW or Ektron will support any alterations to that file. ewebeditproevents.js is thankfully very straight-forward and nice to use.

Any code frags you can share ?

Migrateduser

Absolutely, but they're "at home". I go home weekly and I typically have my machines at home available through the internet but I moved last week, so... long story short, if you can wait a couple of days, I'll be more than happy to share.

The file itself has quite a bit to go on, however. If you look at how the JS file is comprised, you'll get it really quickly. I've been able to do some fairly complex stuff with it, though, which I will plan to share on Friday/this weekend.

I will play with it this am, but may need to see your code

Thanks

Just to chime in with Dave, we also edit the ewebeditproevents.js file direclty for adding buttons to the VFE. Here's a brief snippet of a function that calls a CGI when the button is clicked:

eWebEditProExecCommandHandlers["createlink"] = function(sEditorName, strCmdName, strTextData, lData)
{
        var nWidth = "600";
        var nHeight = "200";
        var strWindowName = "CreateLink";
        var mine = '/iw-bin/myLinkPopup?editorName=' + escape(sEditorName);
        var sProtocol = window.document.location.protocol + "";
        var sHost = window.document.location.host + "";
        var sUrl = sProtocol + "//" + sHost + mine;
        var cToolBar = "scrollbars=no,resizable=no,width=" + nWidth + ",height=" + nHeight;
        var popupwin = window.open(sUrl, strWindowName, cToolBar);
}

In answer to your other question of how to get the selected text into a variable, here's some javascript from the CGI that gets that:

linkTextValue = top.opener.eWebEditPro[objQuery["editorName"]].getSelectedHTML();

Alternatively, You can (indirectly) modify "datacapture_editor_events.js"
in $iwhome/httpd/webapps/content_center/formspub.

It is less straightforward than modifying "ewebeditproevents.js" but have an
advantage of being "properly" located so that you can make your own version under
$iwhome/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/web/formspub and then use
"make_toolkit" to generate it all.

Here is a sample to generate Service Mark (SM):

// Called from onExecCommandDeferred in ewebeditproevents.js
function eWebEditProExecCommand(sEditorName, strCmdName, strTextData, lData)
{if ("jshyperlink" == strCmdName)
{
. . .
}
// add your own else if's at the bottom...
else if ("serviceMark" == strCmdName)
{
var html = '< sup>< small>SM< /small>< /sup>';
eWebEditPro[sEditorName].pasteHTML(html);
}
{
