difference between executing a job and executing a method

These basic doubts that came to my mind..

1.What is the difference between executing a method and executing a job.
Please explain with respect to content server performance.

Which is better.?

2.What is use of dm_agent process that runs..Does it have any relation with jobs?

3.How dmbasic jobs run even when method server is turned off.?

what is a difference between a method and job? that will explain your question 1. Job = method + schedule.

You can invoke a method directly whenever required. but if you want to schedule something (like a daily cleanup job) you need to use a Job.

dm_agent has the threads the execute the jobs.

for question, i am guessing you meant java method server (JMS). JMS only executes java methods. dmbasic methods are run by content server's method server (which just called as method server).

I still have a doubt .

if i kill all dm_agent in process from task bar..does that mean all jobs are automatically shut down..?

not necessarily. dm_agent wont be able to pick up jobs for next run. If you need to terminate the jobs, look for process that has the job's id in it.

ps -ef | grep <<JOB_ID>>

JOB ID is the job's r_object_id; the process would have -job_id <JOB_ID> and you need to terminate that process in the OS.

If a method is hooked up to a Job, then the method output can be stored in the Job log.

The Job log is viewable in DA and store in "/Temp/Jobs/<job name>" folder

Jobs can have arguments which are passed to methods, e.g. folder to process items from. Hence you can have mutliple Job objects for one method.
