Documentum plugin to proxy client DQL queries

Hi,

I was wondering - is there any way to write some kind of a Documentum / DFC plugin that would be a proxy to client's DQL queries?

I don't want all the client applications to be able to run all DQL queries. If I can write a plugin that runs whenever a client requests to execute a DQL query, I would be able to manipulate the returned contents or to block it.

In code - let's say a client application does the following:

IDfClientX clientx = new DfClientX();

IDfQuery query = clientx.getQuery();

query.setDQL(strQuery);

query.execute(session, 0);

I want to write a plugin that would be invoked when execute runs.

Is there any API that allows me to write such a plugin?

As long as you deploy dfc.jar along with your code AND have dfc.properties configured to point to your content server, you should be able to write a plug-in.

What kind of a plugin? How should I edit the dfc.properties file? Where can I find more information regarding that?

Plugin is a very generic term. What I was saying is that you can create/deploy any DFC code as long as you include dfc.jar/properties file. Search on the forums on how to package this with your DFC code.

Again, I want to be able to intercept DQL queries executed with DfQuery (replace DfQuery maybe). Can you give me a more accurate hint?

Intercept from where? I guess I dont quite understand your use case of "proxy". What is your client app that you are trying to integrate with?

My client application is webtop. When it lists files in cabinets it retrieves the file list by a DQL query. I want to be able to intercept that query.

If you want to intercept in order to modify it, then the proper way to do this is to extend the doclist component. Webtop is built on WDK (Web Development Kit) and WDK allows you to extend the component behavior class (and its corresponding methods). I suggest you read the WDK development guide for more details, since the context of your question suggests that you are not familiar with customizing WDK.

If you just want to see what query is fired, you can enable wdk/dfc tracing to see the low level apis that are getting called.

So in conlusion, do you that there is no way to do that in a way that is not client specific?

Hi,

Regarding WDK, I have seen that when clicking on a file with a double-click and opening it with right button and "Open (Read Only)" causes different actions - each uses different attributes to open the file (the first uses attributes given by the DfSysObject object and the latter uses a DQL query, which is the one that I originally wanted to intercept).

Does anyone know why is there a difference and how can make the "Open (read only)" act exactly like a double click?

If I understand you correctly you want to be able to override the IDfQuery interface in DFC so that any client that connects via "your" DFC will have a to go via your query filter (or "plug-in") before the query is executed. This would then allow you to reject or modify queries.

If this is meant to apply to all queries including system queries then the answer is no - not without seriously hacking the DFC - which would be an unsupported customisation. However you may be able to do something in BOF.
