Hi,

How to migrate from Sybase/Solaris to Oracle/AIX.

- I dont want to use dump & load as docbase size is very large

- I know we can use 3rd party tools like buldoser,Open Migrate

But has someone actually implemented such a cross platform migration(Database change,OS Change)...I have heard of Oracle Migration workbench for converting a source database onto Oracle. But what should be done after that...Is it just to follow cloning process?

We did a migration for 2TB of data from Solaris/Oracle to Windows/Oracle and we realized it early that dump and load will not work, so we used Buldoser.

But in your case your platform and database, both are changing. Though both AIX and Solaris are unix based but they differ, but thankfully not to a very large extent.

As far as the migration is concerned, I guess you will follow te below approach:

1) Setup up the environment with Oracle/AIX.

2) Create an empty Docbase on the new env.

3) The above step will make sure all the documentum tables are already available on your new database.

After this, I guess you should be able to migrate your data from Sybase/Solaris to Oracle/AIX using any of the 3rd party tools.

Additionally if you are seting up a new docbase all together, you may consider cloning them as well, once the data has been made available to the new database and the cloning prerequistes are taken care, like same docbase ID and all that...

Seems few small migration POC 's should give you lot of answers.

The toughest part of your migration isn't anything to do with Documentum. I see a 4 step process like this for example:

install new documetnum (for oracle) create docbase (like your previuos one, same ID and stuff right)
drop the oracle tables (or back them up, export them and then drop then you shouldn't need it again)
migrate sybase to oracle
migrate content from old to new (or if you lucky just mount it correctly) you may also need to do some stuff with the aek.key file but that is a minor thing really

I have recently been involved in moving oracle versions which turned out a migration and underlying OS on docbase and database was migrated as well. Its working currently.
