DFC 5.3 SPx clients with Content Server 6.7 SP1

Hi guys, does anyone have a definitive answer as to whether:

1) DFC 5.3 SPx clients will WORK with Content Server 6.7 SP1?

2) DFC 5.3 SPx clients are officially SUPPORTED with Content Server 6.7 SP1?

We have a legacy integtation using DFC 5.3 SP5 and is looking to upgrade the Content Server to 6.7 SP1. Updating the legacy interface is a last resort.

Please provide references to specific documentation, if applicable.

I would try a different approach. Have you tried, if your legacy application will work with DFC 6.7? In most cases that will work.

However if you really want to keep the DFC 5.3 the only thing is to try it out. Be sure you test very good and all aspects of you application, since most will work, but there are small difference that could break your application.

If you are looking for an official statement, if DFC 5.3 is supported by Content Server 6.7, you should ask EMC directly (via Support Request or by asking your EMC Sales Rep.). But I can predict their answer, it will be "no".

I think most of thing will work but you can try in you r development which DFC functionality you are using

I don't think so they will support, and 5.3 SPx support has been off.

5.3 is no longer a supported version. Goto Powerlink and look under Support->Interoperability->Content and Storage Products->Supported Releases to latest versions that are supported. You will see that 5.3 is not listed there (nor 6.0 or 6.5.)

I doubt you may get official support, but unless you are using very specific sections it shalll still work - we have some legacy clients using API which still work on D6.7 SP1 server.

It will be a good idea to migrate your client to DFC 6.7, from what I discoverred on my project most issues came from the fact that DFC 6.7 is more strict that 5.3, and some ugly things which would not be noticeable in 5.3 will break in 6.7. Which, I think, is for good.

Example of such things: access to registered tables more case-sensitive, session management more strict, same for management of collections...

We stumbled across a pretty vague reference in the cross-product dependency guide for Documentum 6.7 SP1 (on page 245) for Webtop (emphasis mine)

“Note: Documentum Collaborative Services 5.3 DAR is installed with Content Server 6.7 SP1 repository so Webtop 5.3 & 5.3 SPx will work with Content Server 6.7 SP1. If Documentum Collaborative Services (formerly Documentum Collaborative Edition) 6.7 SP1 DAR is installed with Content Server 6.7 SP1 repository, Webtop 6.7 SP1 is required.”

The Webtop connectivity to the repository is the DFC so this is relevant.

I think we would agree that it isn't really going to be supported and, if you have a custom DFC client, you should consider moving it to DFC 6.7. (which should just be a recompile).

That being said, if you application has to access both 5.3 and 6.7, you probably need to stay on the 5.3 DFC (allthough the 6.7 might work - we have never tried it).

No reason why they would not. I have used various 5.3 or earlier tools against 6.x repositories, i.e:

5.3 copies of IDQL and IAPI against 6.1 and 6.5 repositories
DQLTester against all 6.x repositories

You obviously can not use any of the new features

Not a chance in **** of any offical support. Its a masive logistics issue.... probably helps to push sales along also

Do you even have the source code of this legacy application? Been to a few sites where even if they had the sources they would not be able to recompile.

Hi guys, thanks for your thoughts and helpful suggestions. As we all suspected, 5.3 SPx is End-Of-Service-Life and the official word i got from EMC is that DFC 5.3 SPx isn't supported with CS 6.7 SP1. They also have anecdotal evidence that it is likely you will likely encounter problems with that combination of DFC and CS, so don't recommend it.
