Need some info for statring Documentum exploration

Hi All,

I am trying to see how Documentum can be used from a normal java programs (Spring/Struts etc.) for Content management. Definitely I will need to have a Documentum server and Info on exposed APIs. I may not need the client(GUI) though.

As I have never worked on Documentum before, can someone please tell me which softwares (trial version(s)/developer version(s)) from Dcoumentum I should download and use to built this small test application for above purpose.

We use Documentum from our programs and other custom clients. Not that difficult and tons of documentation available on this site as well as other places on the web.

There used to be a developer edition but it was discontinued at the end of last year.

I don't think it is available for download anymore. I would think you would either need to purchase or work with a sales rep to obtain an evaluation copy.

In regards to Java/Spring/Struts, you would probably be developing with some type of web services layer access to Documentum rather than leverage the DFC. DFS is probably the most robust from Documentum although Documentum does have CMIS available but functionality is limited. We use the DFC under our Web Services Layer - OpenContent - http://www.tsgrp.com/Open_Source/OpenContent/open-content.jsp - that is open source and available for download.

You will need some of the interface tools - admin for sure - in order to confirm you application is correctly accessing Documentum. Webtop is most full-functioned but should look at D2 as well. Our interfaces (HPI - http://www.tsgrp.com/Open_Source/OpenContent/open-content-hpi.jsp) is written in Java. You can download that for review although it will not work without the Documentum components (DFC, Docbase....).

Thanks a lot for the response Dave.

So unless I purchase, or get an evaluation copy from a sales rep, I will not be able to evaluate as I may have the client applications/APIs available but I may not have Documentum server itself. Is my understanding correct?

I think the developer edition is still available at https://developer-content.emc.com/downloads/dctm_dev_edition_process.htm

If you don't want to use the OOTB interface (webtop) you can query the repository through DFC (Java API) or DFS (Documentum Web Services) or CMIS (standard for content management systems)

I was able to download the Developer version (Though an older version I believe (6.6), as Dave has pointed out correctly- Developer edition has been discontinued for latest version onward.) But something is better than nothing.

Also, I was able to get documentaion about DFC from EMC site, but I was not able to get much of the DFS documentation though. I was able to get some from internet. But I would have perfered to get the same form EMC site itself.

Can anyone let me know where I can find the documentaion about DFS on EMC website?

Yes, I am facing that problem because of not having powerlink account ..

I was able to get info about DFS from internet though.

Can you please let me know if DFS for 6.6 Documentum Developer version ( DFS SDK download) be available for download to all the people, as I am not able to find the same. I saw it had been mentioned in some other older threads but I am not able to find it.

You could use CMIS instead of DFS. As CMIS is a standard there's enough information freely available

You could use OpenContent - http://www.tsgrp.com/Open_Source/OpenContent/open-content.jsp - provides a web services layer on top of the DFC and is available for download as opensource. We didn't find CMIS implementation from Documentum as complete as required for our needs.

One benefit of open source approach is you can change the web service layer as needed by your application. For example, we had a legal client that extended the "Create Folder" call with a "Create Matter" that included some specific and calls to other systems.

Hi All,

I was not able to get DFS, but since as of now we just want to test upload (Import) and Download (Export) of the documents, we will be just using DFC and building a web service wrapper around the Java classes created for Upload and Download (those created using DFC).

Appriciate all you people's help.
