LiveSite Component placement:WYSIWG

While trying to create page with LiveSite .. I placed few components on the layout sheet .. On the layout sheet I can see components are placed fine but when I preview the page then my fonts are distorted and with in two components the gap is too much. I feel the complete concepts of WYSIWG mode is not coming true here ... my components should hav gap some thing of just 5 px but when I generate the page it turns up to 100 px .. why is this happening

Hi Guys,
Continuing in the same thread .. Is there any kind of command line tools to debug the LiveSite components code. Its very difficult to keep on making changes in the appearance xsl and checking the results how the components look like. Any body have ideas how to go about this debugging from command line ...

hi,

it's really tough to understand what you're trying to do. which components did you use? did you customize them?

also, i'm a bit confused as to why you'd like to use a command-line tool to debug the components? it's standard XML and XSL. you can use any XML or XSL editor to do transforms... typically I will preview the component then view-source on the XML in the lower-left frame of the preview window. Copy this XML into a transform engine, like XTrans, and you can create your stylesheet inside it and tweak it as necessary.

I have created couple of components as per my requirements. Like Corporate Header, Corporate Footer, Left Nav, right bar etc...here when I place all the components on a template then it looks fine to me but when I preview the page the fonts size are distorted.

Yeps I understand that we can use XML editors but here how do I get the complete XML (Appearance XML and Content XML).
Is this the XML in the viewer screen is the complete XML and we can write any XSL based on tht ?

And Shenon .. if we are not able to preview the components even..then how do we debug ...
I am not getting any error when I click on the preview button and no information is being displayed on the screen

there are no GUI logs as we used to hav in TS..

At the first place there are so many errors in the developer guide and another thing is so difficult to get support on this product

Amar,

First question is: are you using FireFox? If so, that may be why you can't Preview. LiveSite ( and TeamSite ) only are fully-compliant with IE 6.x+ - i'm pretty sure that IS in the docs. Smiley Happy

Let me know if this helps get you somewhere with the Preview. When the preview window opens, you'll see the combined XML in the lower-left frame. Also, you'll be able to see the transformed HTML in the main window. If you get this far and still have problems, paste me in your complete XML ( from the lower-left-frame ), and the XSL, and the transformed HTML.

Sorry guys, for losing my patience but sometimes when you dont get the proper error messages as expected and its more frustating when you are doing everything as per given in the docs.

Nope I am not using FireFox. i dont dare to test it still on FireFox

But I got the error why its happening :-)

Problem was with Content XML.

When you take datum type "SelectSingle" and <Option Selected="YES"> as given in the doc it simply stops responding and you wont find any error any where. Option tag should have the folowing value

<Option Selected="true">

Similary if you put type to SelectMultiple then it throws an exception.

yes, selected="true|false" is correct -- the docs are not.

I'm going to need to see the rendered HTML... can you show me the result? just do a view source from the preview window's main frame. ( like on top of the rendered html )

this may be due to "snap to grid" being on? try turning that off ( i always do ). you can save your preferences too by going to page-settings from the page edit window i think.

this XML is in the lower-left corner of the preview window.

tables by default have cellpadding and cellspacing > 0. you've defined your table incorrectly:

Shanon another thing .. In a page on LiveSite if I have 10 components and all the components are using same style sheet say abc.css and while creating individual components I need to include the style sheet in each component but after placing the components when I generate the page then my style sheets are included multiple times and that disturbs my page settings ... how can we avoid this to make sure style sheet shud be included only once

explicit CSS support is currently in development, but until then, what i like to do is define a global header template that i use on every page ( or a set of global templates if there are multiple ), then put the CSS <link> tag in there. that way, the components can assume that the CSS is already included.

there are other ways to do this ( with JavaScript - checking a variable, and if not defined, adding the tag w/ DHTML - but I think that's kinda hacky ).

yep, you're correct. i don't use the preview thing to test my css though. i do that in homesite/dreamweaver.. then just code up my xsl in xtrans.
