OD 6.02 Reciever on Linux - Reboot?

I've got a very paranoid Sys Admin, so do you have to reboot post install of an OD Reciever on Linux or not?

If so why? What's OD doing that makes it so that we need to reboot for a reciever? Does it modify the kernel etc...

I am not certain, but I think the solaris install also tells you to reboot. Well, we never do and we do not have any issues (except for the product bugs of course). I wish a reboot would resolve all of those Smiley Happy

There is no need for reboot.

Start it manually after the install with the init.d script.

And for the paranoid SysAdmin, OD can be run as non-root user.

I think that's an old Doc bug - in that the reboot is only necessary for Windows - in order to ensure that System Environment variables are set.

Is the linux reboot msg showing up after the install? Or does it say this in the docs? We should fix that if its not neccessary.

Seriously though, two days ago (23 August 2005) I installed OD 6.0.2 receiver on Linux (twice even) and the installer does not prompt you to reboot and no reboot is necesary. If the docs state you need to reboot, they are wrong.

Perhaps its not a doc issue (at least not in my copy of the OD Installation manual for 6.0.2 - the only mention of "reboot" is with respect to changing the file descriptor limits)

Page 44 indicates that you need to "restart the host" after installing CSF - but that's under a Windows-specific section.
Page 45 is essentially the same for, as I previously mentioned, setting the TMP System Environment variable on Windows.

Ah, page 48 includes:

After you have installed all the base server or receiver software, as well as any other OpenDeploy components, you must configure your bootstrap administrator before restarting the host. See â€œConfiguring the Bootstrap Administratorâ€� on page 77 for more information. with respect to installing the Administration Package on Unix.

All the other references to "restart" are in the context of the "Base Server", "Receiver", "service", "daemon", "software" and as such are not instructing you to reboot the actual server host.

Don't know about the installer - it's been a while since I've installed OD - also I've never done so on Linux.
