Reload a DCR during generation

I want to be able to modify and reload the primary DCR being used to generate a file. So, something like:

Old value: {iw_value name='dcr.field1'/}
<[!CDATA[
  update_field1_in_dcr("new_value");
  $dcr = iwpt_load_dcr(iwpt_get_dcr_name());
]]>
New value: {iw_value name='dcr.field1'/}

I realise this sounds like a hack, but it is even possible?

Not that I've seen. What exactly are you trying to do? Would it not be better to put the logic that changes the value of the field into your formapi code instead of your presentation template? You could then call it on item change or on save.
