Video Content Management

Hi All,

We are doing POC for video content management at enterprise level. The idea behind this project started to deliver video content such as marketing/promotional/how-to videos to retail chains across US and eCommerce website but other ideas that came later to store and publish video content other areas of business corporate, communications team, legal team for archival purpose.

Does any of have any experience with video content in this kind of projects?

Are there any best practices, lessons learned that you can share?

What kind of video formats (Source/Target) best for high quality and low bandwidth scenarios?

Do you have any experience with integrating AVTS with streaming server? Any open source steaming server available?

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

From a Documentum product perspective, EMC had a few ways of letting people consume video. In DAMTop, you needed a streaming server like Darwin in order to do playback. When Media Workspace came out, the streaming was avoided. That product was built out with Flex and required the flash player anyway, so they handled video playback with Flash. Flash is not as popular now because of older issues on the mac as well as no support on the iPad. Video playback with HTML5 is how it is handled more frequently now.

There's another product perspective as well if the people consuming the video content have Documentum logons. That is via D2 and with a new product our company is releasing at the end of May (this month) called Digital MediaSuite for D2. If you're looking at consumption of video outside of Documentum, you can certainly use a streaming server to stream content to provide better video. HTML5 supports progressive download as well and could be enough for you depending on the details.

If the videos are longer or need to be higher def and you want people around the world to view them, you might end up wanting to have some sort of Content Distribution Network (CDN) that replicates your video content into different geographies and when someone hits your website, it will direct them to the closest/fastest download. You can create that sort of thing yourself or there are third parties that have that. Youtube is a well known example of that, but there are other CDNs like Akamai that you can use that will provide all you need as well.
