Changing workarea ownership
System
Hey Everyone,
I am using TeamSIte 6.5 SP2, and was wondering if it is possible to change the workarea owner through a terminal window with a "chown" command, or something similar to that?
Thanks,
Ido

No, the file system is not a "real" file system -- you can change ownership on anything below the workarea level via shell but nothing else. Unfortunately, if you need to do this, you'll have to create another workarea with correct ownership / permissions and base it on the existing workarea we're talking about. Then, blow away the original and rename the duplicate to take the same name as the original.

Is that supported, though? If it works, that's great, but I know this to be a well-known quirk of TeamSite.

You can change the ownership of the workarea via the GUI (if you are master and possibly administrator?) - View the Properties of the workarea, the text box with the owner's userid should be editable - change it and then click the Save button. Whether or not this changes the ownership of directories *within* the workarea is another issue - for that, using chown from the file system (it's a "virtual" file system - which does not mean it isn't "real" ;-) is the way to go.

On TS 6.5, Windows 2003, those items are not editable, but your remark about the filesystem is clearly spoken as someone who (luckily) hasn't recently used TS on Windows, I presume?
It's not a "real" filesystem in that some of its properties only barely resemble those of the platform. Thankfully, however, TeamSite is more of a Solaris product than anything else and its security model reflects that. But on a Windows platform whose security model -- along with many other things -- rather sucks, it does not resemble the file system that is native to the operating system.
So, while I feel that my server's Y drive is actually more "real" than its respective C drive, it's not consistent with the operating system which, in this case, is a beautiful thing.

Hmm - Apparently they're editable for the Branch Properties but not the Workarea Properties (how strange) - my bad. Creating a new workarea seems to be the only officially supported way to do it (though I seem to recall that one could change it via the Windows Explorer and have it work...)

I'd tried the method of changing the permissions through Windows Explorer and... well... it really messed things up. I believe this was with version 6.0L but I don't imagine 6.5 is any different.
