iwfsshrink risks?
cboyd2
Hello,
Our Content Store is pushing 110 GB in size and is becoming very difficult to back up. We are planning on running iwfsshrink for the first time. Has anyone ever encountered problems after running iwfsshrink?
Thanks,
-Chuck

Hi,
I think there won't be any problem.

We run it regularly, and it does a good job of shrinking the backing store.
We sometimes see a reduction of about 20% in terms of disk usage after running it.
Its a good thing.

The shrink is a good process, you can even run it in the background with the app still up which is quite unusual for a Teamsite utility, as normally you have to take down all services, switch off the server, clothe yourself in a flame-retardant jumpsuit and then cross all your appendages....
Im not bitter. really.
Obviously, you'll get a slight performance overhead when running the shrink online and also any files created during the shrink will not be included in the process but I've found these considerations to be negligible. if you have a dev copy of the backing store, run it on there first and note the performance
Hope this helps,

It's also useful to remember that if there is an impact you can pause the freeze directly from the CLT, that way you could schedule it to only run out of core hours.

Hi
We are running TS6.1 in Solaris 8 and we noticed that the iwfsshrink is not ustilized for past three years. We have a store size of 42GB. My concern is on executing iwfsshrink run, the list of files that will be removed. Basically I need to know how TS is creationg duplicate files and why are they created.
Also need to know after execution of this utility, on what basis will my customers feel the performance difference or is this just a IW best practice.
Basically what I feel is on iwfsshrink execution it will improve the performance of file system. Is this correct or do you have any other points on this??
Appreciate your help on this regard.
