has anybody successfully done this change?
any recommendations/best practices, etc?
thanks in advance

We considered it, but I was a bit too scared to go ahead with it. Ghoti has a post laying around with some gotchas as well, but this is what worried me: (evaluated in jan/feb:
Some oddities and concerns included:
* any script that does a unix stat on a file to get group ownership would have to be changed to use a TeamSite CLT (or maybe a cssdk call?)
* after updating iwgroups, there was a lag of approx one minute for the group information to take effect. Does this lag increase with a high numbers of users and content?
* conversion to iwgroups could be rather painful
* management of iwgroups could be rather painful
* users may be confused since everything is set to a generic group name (iwglobal i think)
* iwgroups performs permission spoofing to get the job done. If you are in the iw group, a file shows up as "777". If you are not in the group, a file shows up as "755" (or something along these lines). For some reasons I envision a web publishers running "chmod -R 775" to "fix" the permissions...er
