IW vs. IBM! buzzwords included

Ok recently we had IBM in pitching is their complete Web Content Management system (we currently use websphere)...it was extremely vague...

when i asked about their relationship with Interwoven, he dropped one of the worst...buzzwords...ever

"coopertition"

??! maybe some1 from IW could explain this to me? what advantages does IW offer over the IBM suite?

Assuming you're talking about IBMs Lotus Workplace Content Management System there's no comparison. It's VERY immature. So much that IBM uses TeamSite for WCM.

I recently participated in an evaluation that came down to IBM vs. IWOV. There were four things that especially bothered me about the IBM presentation.

1. A lot of the slides showed functionality that is scheduled to be available in the next version (version 6). We all know how good vendors are at keeping to a release schedule.

2. There is no file locking prior to the file moving into a workflow.

3. Their workflow engine is half-baked at best. For example, there is no way to route back to a previous task. In a review-rejection scenario, all you can do is end the workflow. You can trigger another workflow to start in that case, but having any end to end traceability would be a nightmare. The LWCMS guys claim that they are going to integrate the whole thing with Business Process Choreographer in the next release or so (which is an absolutely incredible product from the demo I saw - of course, we all know how that goes too), but the BPC folks didn't seem to know anything about it.

There are a lot of things to be annoyed about in IWOV's workflow subsystem, but at the end of the day, you can make it do just about anything you would need. With LWCM, it seemed like it would be painful or even impossible to build the sort of trivial workflows that IWOV gives you out of the box.

4. There are actually two separate codebases for the product - a Domino version and a Websphere version. As best as I could make out, the vast majority of their customers are using the Domino version.

Where does DB2 content manager play into all of this?

Where does DB2 content manager play into all of this?

database based content management sounds pretty good, given that
- database is where data typically resides
- database is a proven technology. So, many issues like scalability, robustness have already been addressed.

but, curious if it (or any of add-ons) offers features like automated deployment (Opendeploy in Interwoven suite), content tagging (MetaTagger)...

IBM uses IW internally... in fact, by their own account (I'm not sure if this is true or not, but...) in 2004 they claimed to be IW's largest customer. I've done work for them on 3 separate engagements (2 internal and 1 for a customer of theirs) and they're using it quite a bit internally.

It's very similar to saying that Microsoft uses some type of Unix box to host their own web site -- which they do. Now, would you or should you trust a product when its own creator doesn't trust it with its own vital property?
