reference variable in module

I have a perl module, say "a.pm", which has

my $DEBUG = 1;

The variable is exported in the module as

our @EXPORT_OK = qw($DEBUG);

(there are also a number of subroutines exported).

In the calling program, via the "use" statement, I am able to reference the subroutines, but not the value of $DEBUG. What am I missing?

Scratch the last post. The issue ended up being a scoping issue which has been resolved.
