Lots of External Tasks Now... Hanging...

Everyone,

I had a happy server... with a few users and we all got along very well... now we have 50 users, and lots of workflows and sometimes external tasks are either not getting called, or hanging (i need to debug to see) but what I'm wondering is has anyone else had this on a Windows 2000 box where when you have several external tasks (in perl) that do things like unlock, send email, set attributes, log the workflow (old plus pack code) etc. That they do not transition.

In most of my scripts I'm calling the callback as soon as I capture the variables and get to a point of no return.. i.e. just before sending mail...

What happens is I end up with several external tasks a day that are stalled.

I can go in and do the manual perl call and send it the workflow job task description and other arguments and it does call back the workflow without a problem.

So my question is since the script never finishes so has anyone hit this?

I'm going to try the retry and retry_wait command this works when (according to the doc) when it fails to spawn a process so maybe that will help.

Other ideas welcome. 6.5 SP2 on Win2k,, waiting for 6.7.1 on Linux and also looking into java for external tasks in the future :-D

Here's an idea. Get a sun box and install solaris Smiley Happy

You guys are sooooo funny... here I am crying my heart out to you over a virtual beer.. and what do I get Solaris... man I wouldn't cra&*(& on a solaris box... now RedHat... when 6.7.1 comes out I'm there!!!!

And just kidding on the Solaris box... I don't have any bad feelings about solaris.. just prefer Linux.

Any other ideas :-)

Actually, as a side note, I am curious how teamsite would perform on one of the new multi-core t2000 boxes from Sun. TeamSite generally is not a CPU hog, but it does do a lot of parallel processing. I would love to see some benchmarks around parallel workflow processing. Maybe if I have some free time I will get to it....

Again... tell me something I did not know.. I know my workflows are ****..... ;-) I imagine it would do well on those new boxes. We've got a huge dell box on the way in q3 for when linux comes out.

Also we need someone for 2 months for another project... so do you think you'd have time to clean up my code in 2 months ;-)

Me on windows is a bad bad thing. I would probably waste a month trying to run commands such as ls, rm, vi, ssh and mv.

Ok so now its monday maybe I can ask a serious question!

Is there anything coming up in the logs? Are there possibly more than 500 files attached to each workflow that fails?
Have any environment variables changed?

Just shooting in the dark here!

Start with the simple troubleshooting. Since you are using exteral tasks and they are hanging on them you could write to an external file and log some details and locations within the external task to the file. Print some line numbers after certain areas of the code and the name of the perl file to the external log file. That's what I have done in the past to find out why some external tasks are hanging. I've always found out that it's my code that's the problem.

Thanks for the response. I'm startign down the path of debugging... for now I'm adding this to the workflow section of the iw.cfg.

external_task_retry_wait=5

Just to see if any more of these (locked) external tasks show up.

I've added a retry = "t" to the tasks in the workflows as well. So far (and it's been a lite day) there have been no issues, so depending on if this fixes it I may or may not need to do the extra debugging.
