Problem with # sign in username

I had this problem for long where images do not show up when the username has a #sign i.e. domain\#tnigam.

Now recently I noticed that my proxy remapping also fails if the usrname has # sign.

Did anybody saw these kind of problems ever. In our company all the contractors have # sign in their username.
