Passed-in multiselect value

I'm trying to figure out / remember how to access the elements of a multiple select list on the workflow instantiation form.

For instance, I give the user the option of selecting multiple approvers which converts to a grouptask. However, I also need to set these approvers as a workflow variable. If my variable name is "approver", __TAG__('approver'); appears to be an array whether one or multiple approvers are selected. However, when I try to access it as an array, it looks like it might be an object.

Is there some anatomy to this thing? I figure this is a pretty common requirement -- any pointers are appreciated.

As far as retrived values are concerened.. they are in comma separated format but acts as an array. Better would be to split the value and then rejoin the same using join function.
