Transconverter

All my source documents are of type .pdf I've heard that the builtin transconverter with MT doenst convert .pdf files properly. I've checked with some examples and it doesnt crack well. I was suggested to use some other external transconverter like xpdf or other. The problem is, those are utilities which has a GUI interface and require mannual entry.

I need to convert programatically and on the fly. So i need to do with some CLTs or with some API's.

Can anybody suggest some API or opensource to convert pdf files to text files.
