If the workflow is being initiated and invoked properly, then might be the error is within your external task. Check the logs of the same. Try some debugging techniques.

Also for debugging of the wf use the CLT 'iwgetwfobj' from command prompt to check that each task has the correct successor as per the requirement.

Additionally run the workflow under debug mode by setting the value of $DEBUG_MODE = 1;
This will let you know if the tasks are linked in order.
After this, put some fiel write code in your external task script to check if values are being returned properly.
