Hi, I am trying to autogenerate a DocID which has to be a new no for every new form entry. I can use an inline, but it does it all the time, even if it is an edit. So went for script which checks the field if it is already populated. if not has to fill it up. for that can i use a perl program which does that work. I will call it by callserver. if i can, how can i pass the value generated by the perl program to fill in the field using setValue ?? Please advise..

For all of your yes/no questions, the answer is yes.

For the how do I question, the answer is to get a reference to the script frame for the template and execute whatever code you want. You can either call a callback function and have it do additional processing/validation and make the call to setValue() or you could call setValue directly from your perl cgi.

As a solution, i suggest to use FormAPI within the DCT itself. Just go on and check if the DCRname exists or undefined. If exists you are in EDIT mode... so no need to generate the DocID. If undefined.... do whatever you have to do.

Hi,

You can autogenerate the DOCID through your IPL program and then you can use following javascript code to set that value in your text item in DCR..

No matter which solution you come up with, keep in mind what will happen if a user copies or moves a DCR. You don't want multiple DCRs having the same unique id and you also probably don't want your unique id changing.
