Problem - I am making modification to DCT on all template. Now, I need to regenerate all the existing DCR and ensure they get placed into it proper location. Can someone guide me to the easiest solution to complete this task? Thank you in advanced.

I am not sure what you mean by "regenerating" DCRs since DCRs are really not "generated".

Having said that, if you are modifying the DCT to the extent that every existing DCR needs to be modified, you will need to write a script of some sort that would basically do XML transformation from your old DCT structure to new DCT structure.

Assuming you are generating some files out of the DCRs using PT, you will possibly need to make appropriate changes to PT and re-generate all existing pages. The latter is trivial to do.

IwovGraduate already addressed some of this - but on the assumption that the change you were making to the DCT was a change in structure. If the change to the DCT was simply to add a field without changing the actual structure of the DCT, then you don't need to transform the XML within all your existing DCRs (i.e. - you're much better off if you can avoid changing the structure).

You've modified all the DCTs, now you probably have to modify all the PTs as well.

Also - does the new field have a default value? If so - you (probably) want to regenerate all the pages from all the DCRs - I believe there have been scripts to do this posted in the forums and/or in the Tech Library on this site - seek and ye shall (hopefully) find.

If the new field does not have a default value, then there's little reason to regenerate all the pages because nothing new is likely to show up - instead, over time, as the new field gets populated when users edit the existing DCRs (and/or create new ones) the pages will get regenerated and show the new information.

I have a field with in DCT that is set to default to yes. Based on that field being marked yes. I have regenerate pages from the exist DCRs so proper value is notified with in the page. All the DCR exist with in differnet branches. As you can tell I need to regenerate pages for the existing DCR for all the branches. Is there easy script out there to generate this task? Please help. Nope. 2 options. Open and close each DCR. Or write a perl script to regex each DCR.

I have done the latter. It is not too tough, but very DCR specific, so sample code won't make much difference.

You could post a your DCT and maybe someone feels sorry for you and will write it for you. Andy maybe the Easter Bunny will stop by. Smiley Very Happy

Do the DCR's need to have any editing done to them (is the yes value already entered and saved in the existing DCR's)
- if the values need to be changed and you are using windows you could use a Windows based search and replace tool to search your Y: drive and replace the values. I have done this before.

If the above is true, are you trying to do a mass re-generate of all those changed files.
- after you have done this you can take the same list and place it into a batch file and wrap the generate commands around it, but you'll have to know the locations of the tpl files specific to that DCR
- or you could do a list modified from the highest folder and then select all the files you need and submit them into a workflow that has an external task that calls a perl file that runs the generate commands against each DCR

Judging from previous posts - the DCRs need to be "edited" so that they get the new field added to them (with the default value) that was added to the DCT.

This could be done via script if you're comfortable scripting the insertion of a new element within an existing XML document (if you mess up - and try to edit the DCR, you're likely to lose data that you'll have to restore from TS's staging area before you try again). There are a number of approaches one could take with the script (XML parsing, regex substitution, etc.) and it's basically up to the person writing the script to determine which way they feel most comfortable doing it (keep in mind that most DCRs have all the content XML in one-line unless an option was set in the iw.cfg to use the pretty_dcr format ... which may or may not work in 6.x [I've seen mixed results])

Once all the DCRs have been correctly modified - then you need to regenerate all the pages from them - this can be tricky. If you can find all the existing generated pages, select them and then invoke iwregen on them - that should take care of most if not all of the work. You can use traverse through your content areas in TS and use iwextattr to find all the generated pages and then 'touch' them to mark this as modified so you can then find them easily within the GUI - or you can use the same approach to programmatically find and run iwregen on the files directly (iwregen appears to be able to take multiple path specifications in one invokation, but you have to make sure you don't exceed the length of a command line and/or number of parameters on a command line if you're going to try to process more than one file at a time).

If you start from the modified DCRs you need to know what PT to use (if you're lucky there's only one choice for the DCT type) and the path and name of the output file (if you're lucky it can be programmatically determined based on the path and name of the DCR).

Anyplace where you do not have a 1:1 synchronization between paths and filenames of DCRs and their generated pages - you're going to have a lot more work to do. E.g.: if your DCR is in WORKAREA/waname/templatedata/category/datatype/data/****.dcr and your generated page is WORKAREA/waname/somedir/some_other_dir/yyy.html, unless you recorded the path and name of the generated page within the DCR or as an EA on the DCR or in some sort of DB - it's going to be pretty much impossible to regenerate that page starting from the DCR itself.

There are probably a few more issues to be considered as well.

Recommendation: Think carefully about what you are attempting to do, create an edition on all the branches to be affected (just in case); design, test-out, and fully document the process you believe will satisfy the requirements on one file first, and then on five or ten files - several times until you believe it is all working correctly - then, let it rip.
