api for generating filehistory in 6.x

System

I'm working on migrating an teamsite based application from 5.5.2 to 6.x. The person who has worked on that needs me to implement a capability for storing file history in the backing store since we do not use editions. He sent
me some code/pseudo code for doign thsi from the 5.5.3 era, and I am to use this to find the wway to do this in 6.0. The pseudo code is below and would appreciate any pointers to the new API in 6:

Even if you aren't using named editions, you are creating implicit (hidden) editions with every submit. Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like you are going to a whole lot of effort to replicate core functionality.

Yes, we even create submit comments. I also cannot understand what the difference would be between the submit history, and this so-called "filehistory" that the teamsite 5.5.2 guru wants me to implement.

At any rate, is there an API to store more filehistory in the backing store? I haven't found any documented API to store file history into the backing store in the manual set yet, but he claims that it existed in the 5.5.2 version of teamsite?

I've attached the workflow that made the calls included above. I may call INterwoven. I cannot cmopletely understand why this is needed, but I think the product should ahve a migration path from 5.5.2 ro 6.0.
