LiveSite Runtime Module, More Information?

I am hearing some resistance coming from 'the other department' in having to install the LiveSite Runtime Module (servlet right?) on our servers.

I've look through these documents:

livesite.221.developer_guide.pdf
livesite.220.user_guide.pdf
LiveSite install Guide.221.ig.pdf

and I have found no details on the impact of installing this Module on a server.

I one webinar I found skimmed over the Module and I've attached the screen shots here...

Is there any more information on this Module available so that I may argue its install on our servers?

I am not sure if it ever struck you but contacting the AE in your region would be a good idea.

Yea, that's my second task. But before that I am looking to see if this issue has been addressed by people in the field.

LiveSite Runtime a standalone J2EE web app and is designed to be self-contained and have minimal impact on any other web apps or web servers that might be running. The biggest impact is that if you want to use certain advanced URL features (like selecting a site based on domain name or context path), then you need to deploy Runtime to the root context ("/"), and allow the SiteFilter to process all requests (map it to "/*"). However, this is somewhat optional -- some customers deploy LiveSite Runtime to other contexts because they don't need those features.

The upside of installing the Runtime module is that you can have dynamic web pages. If you don't install it, your options are:
1. Pre-generate static HTML pages before deployment (a static web site).
2. Implement some custom solution for dynamic pages (like having a section of the site be JSP or ASP pages instead of HTML pages) which may require more IT support to maintain.

On p.13 of the LiveSite 2.2.1 User's Guide, the fields "site address" and "directory" are the "advanced URL features."

The site address is for when you have multiple domain names that point to the same machine; LiveSite will read the domain name and decide which site to use. For example, if www.starbucks.com and www.seatlesfinest.com were hosted on the same system, LiveSite would respond to the first domain name with /sites/Starbucks/Home.page and to the second domain name with /sites/Seatle's Finest/Main.page.

would see the same thing as The directory is a shorthand or alias for the site. So you could setup frap as an alias for Frappuccino Site. People who went to www.starbucks.com/frap would see the same thing as www.starbucks.com/sites/Frappuccino Site/Start.page.

Both of these features will only fully work if you have SiteFilter mapped to /* and have LiveSite at the root context ("/"). If you install the default runtime server, it sets itself up that way automatically. If you are installing the runtime web app inside an existing container, or integrating the runtime servlets and filters into an existing web app, then you will need to decide what to do about the SiteFilter mapping.

(Note: I'm just using Starbucks as an example. I have no idea whether they are actually our customer or not. I think they should be, though. They would like it.)

We're installing LiveSite on our R&D Server today. We'll have to do some performance testing (DCR created site vs. a LiveSite created site) at some point.

I'll post anything interesting if I find it.

Hi Rich,

There is a delay between the time you sign up, and when your status is switched from guest to member. You won't have to do anything additional to get the access. I appreciate your patience. I believe you are now switched to member.
