Is it possible to call Java servlets instead of Cgi servlets

Hi ,

I am new to interwoven.I am comfortable with Java Servlets but have never done CGI servlets.
I want to call a servlet through the callserver method of formapi and get some values populated from the databse.
Can some one provide me the sample code for something similar to this

Theoretically, as long as your CallServer returns something, you're fine. You may need a wrapper CGI script to call your servlet and then relay the servlet's output to back to the DCT. So, if you eventually wanted to write something in Prolog (please don't -- just sake of argument), you could reference it a CGI and as long as you can either write to STDOUT or return the output to the CGI (depending on what specifically your CallServer does), you're fine.

I strongly recommend that you become familiar with CGI, however. It's used quite a bit in TeamSite and contorting some of TeamSite's core functionality (such as FormAPI) to use other languages is bad design and a punishment for your successor(s).

The general vector for TeamSite is more Java and less scripting (although it will be interesting to see what happens now that JSR-223 is officially part of Java 6), so handling custom menu items and such with jsps or servlets is just fine and is probably a good way to go. Now, if he wanted to write it in C++ or something, then I would be all over telling him to learn some perl and CGI.

Dave, you apparently missed the "and such". The only relevant distinction between a custom menu item and a callServer in this case is the set of parameters that are passed. In a callServer, the majority of the parameters are going to be specified by the developer when he sets up his request object. For a custom menu item, most are going to be implicitly passed. For that matter, the same applies to a cgi task in workflow.

To garima's specific question, yes, it is possible. I just don't happen to have any sample code for you, since I have a bunch of CGIs pre-written that do those things, so I haven't had a big motivation to port them to java.

The actual problem is fairly trivial, so I expect that you'll be able to solve it even without a sample. At a high level, what you want to do is

Instantiate your request object
Make calls to request.getParameter() to get the values of the parameters you set up when you invoked callServer()
Do whatever processing it is you need to do (database lookups, xml parsing, CSSDK calls, whatever)
Write out an HTML page that includes some javascript with a method that will be invoked in response to the onLoad event
Inside that method, get the parent scriptframe and either twiddle values directly (e.g. your calls to to set the option list on the item) or invoke a callback function that you have defined in your formAPI javascript file.

The thing that will be a bigger hassle than writing the servlet will be getting it included in the customer toolkit and rebuilding. I would be apt to do a JSP rather than a servlet, but if you are an experienced java developer, you shouldn't have any trouble with the compile and build stuff.

It should be possible to use callserver with servlets.
First try to execute the servlet from browser and if it is running properly use it in callserver.
The only requirement from CGI/ servelet is that it should send a valid javascript.

As I indicated in my response to your other thread on this same topic - try:

opener.parent.getScriptFrame()

and see if that resolves the problem.

Okay - well I guess that's eliminated as the source of the problem.

Are you tunneling through all the form information provided by the callout? Among the information that is included (post-ed) when a callout is invoked, is a session string - which is used for authentication. Presumably you need to make sure that exists when you try to interact with the form from your servlet.

Mind you, I haven't done any servlet programming - the above is based on experience with Perl CGI callout programming - where the CGI runs on the same server as TeamSite. You're clearly in a different environment, so take my comments with the proverbial grain-of-salt.

All,

It is certainy possible and, in fact, encouraged ( AFAI'm Concered at least ) to get away from CGI and PERL and use Java Servlets for this functionality. Why? Well, because they're fully Object-oriented, compiled, and frankly a heck of a lot cleaner.

If you read the UITK documentation, you'll see that you can add custom servlets to TeamSite via the customer toolkit. Create your servlet in there and add a servlet-mapping to the toolkit's web.xml. Then you'll be able to access your servlet at something like this ( based on how you cfg web.xml )

http://hostname/iw-cc/servletName

Just have the callServer hit up this URL, passing whatever parameters/argument you'll need. The servlet should return JavaScript code containing FormAPI calls to dynamically change the dropdown as necessary. Alternatively you may use AJAX to do the same thing. Whichever would be easier for you... but callServer and AJAX's XmlHttpRequest are pretty much the same thing.

The Permission issue you are facing is definitely due to the Parent (in this case TeamSite) and the child (JSP/Java Servlet) being run on different m/c. When the javascript in the called program tries to access to the parent javascript object permission error is thrown.

One way to resolve this is (other than hosting the JSP/Java Servlet on the same m/c as TeamSite) set window.host value to be same as the TeamSite(parent) box host name and then try accessing the javascript object.

"no other web server" or "no web server"?
Assuming the latter - it sounds like you (or whomever installed TeamSite on that server) did not fully read the instructions - you need to have a "customer web server" installed on the TeamSite server running on port 81 (or you need to know what you are doing to do it some other way) - typically on Windows, this is IIS - typically on Unix, it's Apache.

I suggest you spend a bit more time with the TeamSite Installation and Administration manuals.
