Data Deploy approach
Thiags
Hi,
I am working on a pilot project which is in the initial phase. As per the business requirment we are planning to have a .net web application which will be the single point of data entry for the users. This web application will interact with the application layer which will inturn talk to the teamsite web service using the Content services sdk. All the contents will have to be deployed to the exiting database which has lot of data apart from content. This is the overall architecture of the project.
The data captured at web application need to generate the dcrs in teamsite and using a workflow they will get deployed to QA and to production on approval.
Here is a simple example how data will be captured and pushed to database.
Example of sample field captured in the web form - vendor codes are “I_VERE” and “I_VERW” where the “I” represents the category (in this case “Internet”) and the “VERE” and “VERW” represent different organizational units within Verizon (“Verizon East” and “Verizon West”). Currently, table contains fields for category, the organizational unit, AND the vendor code.
Need approach
1.for xml mapping of how data captured in single field can be split and update three diffenet columns in the database.
2. Which datadeploy model will suit like Standalone or DAS or target deployment
3.How can we achieve version of content in the existing database. After the pilot project success we will redesign the database which will have only content maintained out of teamsite.
I would really appreciate if you can throw some light and share your thoughts if you have worked on similar project before.
Please mention if you have come across any forum thread or KB article which can help me in acheiving a solution
Thanks!
Thiags

Hi, Thiags. It's sounds like you are probably in need of spending a few dollars with an IWOV services partner to really dig deeply into your questions. Here's what I can offer based on the information you have given.
For the creation of your DCRs from your web app, you don't necessarily need datadeploy at all. You could have your webapp write out the DCRs directly. If you want to use DD to solve the problem you could have it do a reverse deploy from the database into which the webapp is writing, but you'll still have to do some transformation and/or parsing of the resultant xml. I've done that before, when someone else designed the architecture, and there are very few situations where I would recommend it.
For mapping one field to multiple columns when you deploy a DCR into a db, you'll need to write a custom tuple pre-processor in Java to transform the data. Alternatively, you could split the visible field into three hidden fields using some FormAPI on your DCT. That requirement seems a little odd, though. Why not just collect the three fields separately to begin with?
Whether you want to use DAS or standalone depends mostly on whether or not you need to have versions of the data in the DB and how you are going to be using the data. I don't think you've given enough info below to make a decision.
Question #3 suggests that you might want to use DAS and use TeamSite for the data entry to you can do the versioning, but again, without way more detail, that's difficult to say.
There are a lot of consultants on this board (including me), some from IWOV partners, some from IWOV PSO, and some independent. I'd really encourage you to get some experienced help on this, at least to get you over the hump on the architecture.
