Hi,

I have captured expiry date for the DCRs as a field in the DCTs. Now on the basis of this I want to identify all such DCRs in a particular branch or staging area or latest edition that are about to expire five days from now.

How do I use perl to implement the same?

You can have any of these approach

1. Put the expiry date while saving as an external attribute and then check the value thru Perl.

2. Parse each DCR using XML Smiley Very Happy

OM or DCR:Node and get the value of that element.

Can do the processing of DCRs based on the value.

A somewhat more complete list (though not necessarilly exhaustive):

In general, the DB solution is probably the most efficient mechanism over the long term, parsing the DCRs and using a flat-file index are probably fairly even, and using EAs (as a primary mechanism, not as a source for the DB) is probably the worst of these solutions.

To elaborate on Adam's last bullet - this scenario is the poster child for using DataDeploy in DAS mode. It will give you the quickest path to implementation with the least amount of custom code.

You should also now be able to use the Search API's to retrieve this. Index the field containing the expiry date (either DCT or EA) and then perform a search query against that field.

I don't know if anyone is using search like this, but in theory it could replace the need for a database for things like this.

I have used this approach at a couple of customers. The only caveat you might want to keep in mind is that Search indexes the files/EAs upon Submit.

Theres also the fact that Search APIs (v1.0) allows you to search only one "area" at a time. I hear that in TS 6.7/Search 2.0 allows cross-branch searches. Haven't tried that.

IMHO, although databases are much more effecient for searches, using DAS just to allow search on expiration dates is kind of an overkill.

True, but not in the GUI, only in the API. I was very bummed to hear that from Sunil at GearUP.
