onItemChange functionality fails with visualformat textarea

In a DCR template, if I declare a textarea with visualfromat
For e.g.
<br /><br />and if I add onItemChange event on this textarea then it doesn't work.<br />For e.g. <br />IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("/Required Fields/kitContains","onItemChange", checkTextareaLimit);<br /><br />This onItemChange event doesn't get executed.<br /><br />Please hlp me to solve this, if I remove the visualformat then it works, but I need the visualformat
