How to use Web on Mobile ?

Hi all !

I have some question. Now I'm have website It create from Interwoven. And deploy content with opendeploy.
In my website it have many function to use.And now My boss tell me "He want to use this website on mobile
And use all function same website" So from this How I can convert my web to use on mobile.

Example
1. install new software.
2. modify content
3. etc

And after conver to mobile everything it can use same web on pc

Now as per your query... you need your web should be visible to PC users as well as mobile users. Now as the mobile screen is small so definitely it needs content to be precise.

So you have to analyse as what data out of DCT is to be displayed on mobile. Depending on your analysation, you have to generate 2 pages simultaneously (one would be .wml and other would be .html)

As per software to be installed... would be the application/ mini mobile browser on which you can cross-check your generated content.

To deliver content on mobile devices is a tricky subject because of large number of devices available in the market and each device has its own set of characterstics in terms of screen size, resolution, OS, browsers etc

I would like to know from people's experience

1) What are the key challenges you have faced while converting your existing site to mobile enabled?

2) Did you try using different products like Volantis, MobileAware, M-Wise etc which claims to enable content delivery on mobile devices?

3) If yes, then which product do you recommend to use as run time delivery engine for mobile deivices?

I will look forward your thoughts here.

just use css and go through a UI case study for mobile devices. no applications necessary. you just include your css file that's made specifically for mobile devices and you're done. You should also build your javascript to perform graceful degradation so that when a browser doesn't support javascript people can still use your pages. never embed javascript on a page, always link to an external .js file. your pages should display with minimal images on mobile devices.

I am not completely sure if a simple CSS will do the magic!

I have seen the problem statement defined by all the product vendors like Volantis/mobileaware/m-wise/oracle weblogic etc and they suggest to use device repository and device specific policies. A CSS based approach is a question on these products itself!!

If you can send me any URL of the site which worked with css specific solution itself then it will be great.

look delivering content to a mobile device is not tricky. css was designed so you could change the styles of a website based on the media that's being used to display. You can create a specific css file for each of the media. You can specify the following types of media:

all Used for all media type devices
aural Used for speech and sound synthesizers
braille Used for braille tactile feedback devices
embossed Used for paged braille printers
handheld Used for small or handheld devices
print Used for printers
projection Used for projected presentations, like slides
screen Used for computer screens
tty Used for media using a fixed-pitch character grid, like teletypes and terminals
tv Used for television-type devices

the default is all, but you can include specific style sheets for each media type if you wanted. but since you're only worried about mobile devices just create a unique stylesheet for "handheld"

probably the biggest thing to consider is making sure you build your UI and document structure intelligently enough so that it's easy to turn things on and off. Really though for the standard sites out there that's just delivering content to mobile devices setting something like that up is pretty trivial. I'd say just invest in a good IA/UI person and you should be good to go.

oh and those vendors, of course they're gonna say you need their application because they are trying to sell you stuff. take everything they say with a huge grain of salt.

There are too many devices out there in the market. Just wondering if you suggest to handle them all through CSS? Am i missing the link here?
