RSS - Load on the webserver.
System
Hi,
I have been able to create RSS feed, deploy it onto my webserver and display that feed on a RSS reader/Aggregator... Whenever i make any changes to RSS feed and redeploy, the changes appear on the RSS reader/aggregator...
This implies that the Reader continuosly fetches the RSS feed from the webserver. My questions are:
1. How exactly will a RSS reader work?
2. What will/might be the load on the web server when there are more than 1000s of users subscribed to the same feed?
3. What are the pros and cons?
Thanks and Regards
Dixit

If I use a desktop or even a web-based reader, it will usually grab a feed at a time specified by the problem. You can usually change this and for some it can be every 5 or 20 minutes, to once an hour to once a day.
The traffic will be the same as any page, if you have 1,000 people hitting a jpg it's the same. Can your server(s) handle having a couple thousand extra hits?

1) Usually most readers have a poll interval. It is different in every reader, but usually it is around 1 hour
2) Same as 1000 users downloading the RSS file. Get a JMeter or use apache bench "ab" to test your files.
