Is there a way to add files to a updatetask or usertask at the task level and not the workflow level using the WFconstructor? The task is not the start task either.

I think I read that files can only be added at creation and dynamically on active tasks only.

In a usertask you can add files through the UI.
An updatetask, like a submittask, is a packaged automated task so there's no point at which additional files can be added. An externaltask or cgitask provides a programmatic interface which allows you to add files. Usertasks and grouptasks (and cgitasks too) provide the means for adding files at the UI level.

If the above doesn't help - perhaps you can explain, in a bit more detail, what you are trying to accomplish.

I'm looking at more of the programmatic way...

I have an external task that is searching through a branch and regenerating files as needed. I want to add those regenerated files to the next task which is just a simple user task (approval).

Using Task object.. call the method AddFile()

Your externaltask script is not adding the files to the usertask - it will be adding files through the WFtask object associated with the externaltask.

In truth - the files are more directly associated with the job than the task - but the interface for adding / removing them is at the task level. (in rare cases, one can create multi-path workflows where different paths have different files associated - but that's rare and usually a questionable design)
