Difference between files of type ipl and cgi

Hi,

I am new to the world of cgi and perl.
I want to write a cgi script which I would be able to call from forms API callServer method.

I was going through forms publisher document of Teamsite 6.5
There I found an example_datacapture_callout.ipl file referred as a CGI program.

I am confused what is the difference between .cgi and .ipl file types ?
How .ipl file type can be used as a CGI program ?

CGI is more a kind of programming where as IPL is a reference to the language the program was written in.

Binary (compiled) CGI programs generally end with a .cgi extension.
Scripted (non-compiled) CGI programs may end with a .cgi extension, but can just as easily end with a different extension as long as the program is referenced as such.

If a program / script is written to retrieve information from POST/GET requests and to send HTML formatted code (potentially with other embedded code such as JSP, JavaScript, etc.) to STDOUT (the browser) - then it is generally considered a CGI program / script.

For TeamSite - all [custom] CGI programs tend to live in IWHOME/httpd/iw-bin/
