What you need to say with "Display items (read only)"? All the fields which are set as read only are always visible unless set as hidden also.
By default, it has to be a part of DCR/XML file. However, you can generate your own DCR structure using workflows with external tasks.

if field has some value and you set the field hidden it doesnt work properly. I have couple of bad exp regarding this earlier. The best solution is to use formAPI to make fields invisible.
