Don't know if this will work - but I suppose you could try:

<excludePattern regex="^\./[^/]+/" />

though this might interfere with trying to deploy to sub-directories too. You may want (need?) to re-examine your entire deployment strategy and infrastructure.

Honestly I got extremely tired of trying to figuire an all encompassing regex expression for my deployments. I moved to filelist deployments and used my .ipl(s) that created the filelist to control what files got into the deployment phase. One quick way to achieve a non folder deployment/deletion with filelist is just to make sure the high level folder does not make it into the list.
example : highlevel folder name: topfolder
foreach $file(@attachedfileaarray) {
if ($file =~ m/^topfolder\//)
{
add file to filelist
}
}

With the example above the file must begin with "topfolder/"
selecting the folder only gives "topfolder", which will not be included in the filelist. Also you do not need to manage 25,000 includes and excludes in your OD configs.
