External Data Source for DataDeploy

Hi all,

I've got issues running an External Data Source for DataDeploy. I'd like to run a test class to get the current time during the deployment but it
fails to load the class and throws this error message:

These are the steps I've followed:

1.) Created the java file based on the example in od-home/userlib
2.) Compiled the java file using: javac -classpath %classpath%;.;../lib/ddcomb.jar TodayDateTime.java in od-home/userlib
3.) Createda jar file using: jar cvf TodayDateTime.jar TodayDateTime.java in od-home/userlib
4.) Added od-home/userlib/TodayDateTime.jar to classpath
5.) Added this to my dbschema.cfg file

column name="seq_col_2" data-type="VARCHAR2(255)" value-from-callout="iwov:dd:java:TodayDateTime" allows-null="yes"
6.) Restarted OpenDeploy and runned a filelist deployment for a dcr.
7.) Table with two columns is getting created and path is filled but no seq_col_2

I have tried this:

but then the whole deployment hangs???

OS: W2K Server
OD: Version 6.0.2.0.0 Build 46963 Interwoven 20050402
DB: Oracle 8i

Are there any ways to test if my class is working in the first place using normal java or where could be my error?

Anyway I want to fetch sequence numbers from Oracle during the deployment time.
Any experience weather its better to use External-DataSource or Tuple-Preprocessor?

For your first issue,

Did you include your TodayDateTime.class file in a jar, and place it in the OpenDeployNG/userlib directory, followed by a restart of the OpenDeploy server?

Based on how you are referencing the class, it looks like you have placed this in the default package, instead of putting it under the standard com.. whatever structure. This could be fine if indeed the java was created that way.

Have you developed this class in a text editor, or inside of a standard IDE? If just a text editor I wonder if it is valid.

As for your other question, external data source is a much better way to go, as the OpenDeploy engine will pass you in a database connection, based on the database connection you are using to actually load your data. This makes the java coding very simple.

Thanks for the feedback.
I have put the TodayDateTime.class file in a jar file TodayDateTime.jar in userlib and restarted OpenDeploy. Hope this is not causing issues that the jar and the class file have the same name. $od-home/userlib/TodayDateTime.jar is also part of my classpath. Also I have place the .class file in the root dir of the jar file and not using the com... whatever structure.

I have created the .java file in Ultraedit and compiled it using -classpath argument so I dont think this is causing issues.

what anoyes me most is that I had this running under DD 5.6 but this has changes a lot.

I've made some changes now and basically the deployment hangs now when trying to call the class:

what do you mean by the .jar file is part of your classpath? Have you modified the OD configuration files?

nope. my .jar file is in the classpath. I assume thats whats needed to find the jar file in the first place?

I am still a bit confused by what you mean. All you need to do is add the jar file to the userlib directory and it should be loaded when the OD process loads and should stay memory resident while OD is running.

What do you have listed in your odbase.xml file for the database deployments section?

Also, just for kicks, place the class file inside of a package, i.e. com.mycompany.deployment. It could be a DD bug that doesn't support putting things into the default package.

I've done that now and it seems to find the class now but the deployment just hangs. So the logfile is not showing a "ERROR:Unable to load class " error but the following:

I am also encountering similar error.
I am trying to modify the value for a table column in the External data-source.
Created the jar file as specified in the document and copied into userlib directory and restarted OD.

My Eclipse compiler setting was in 1.5.
I have recreated the jar with java 1.4 compiler. It started working.
