We are using Teamsite 6.1 SP2, on Unix with BEA weblogic portal and bulkloader.

When I run a workflow and bulkloader is invoked to upload the content to the BEA virtual content repository (vcr) it creates a log, if at the completion of the upload to the vcr the shell script checks to see if an exception was generated in the log. If an exception was found whilst reading the log a failure is returned.

Could I write the exception information to the email sent to the producer?

I'm not entirely sure I understand the question - but if the code that is used to check the logs is run from the server which is sending the email - then the answer is probably "yes" - you can incorporate that into the body of the email - though the next question is: what are you using to create/send the email? The details of how you can add the information to your email depends on that.
