Problem with FormApi Validation

I am trying to access Search_Alt in my javascrpit file using
var phoneItem=IWDatacapture.getItem("/abc/Headers/Search_Alt[1]");
but it is returning null.does formpit works with IWOV dcts.
How do I access search_alt elemnt from javascrpit file.
