CallServer Concept

Hi there,

Can anyone please get me clear on callserver functionality??? I have few questions:

1. Can the CallServer be called on initialization of the DCT?

2. Also i have to call a CGI through CallServer, is it possible to call another perl file from the CGI. This is not a requirement but the CGI file is a legacy code... which i have to continue with. So i am thinking of to call the CGI on initialization and then write my own code within the perl file.

Can the CallServer be called on initialization of the DCT?

Yes, absolutely. Remember however that as stated in FormAPI Guide "The callServer() method is asynchronous. A new thread is started with the HTTP
request and completes only when it finishes executing the code returned by the server. The user script code that made the request continues executing
immediately after the call to callServer()."

In most cases you would like a callback to your DC Form and it is up to you to (re)synchronize processes if needed, cancel remoteCall on timeout etc

What does it mean "through"? If you call your cgi from callServer, you'll get back html code via stdout, that's it. Do not expect any page to appear on
your Client side unless of course you code your callback to make it happen from inside the Form. If you call callServer from CGI then you do not
need callSever() as a method in the Form. It is just another code executed from your CGI.

Sure, see above

You do not need IWDatacapture.callServer() method to do that. Actually, callServer() is a mechanism that should NOT be used in this scenario. Just use
window.open() or window's Dialog methods.

2. as long as the CGI returns a valid javascript, you can do anything in there. Cann another perl cgi, pull database content, etc.
