want to make select box as readonly

I have a multiselect box.
I want to make it readonly.i m using a callout which opens a listbox containg choices.whatever user selects frm the listbox is populating the select box.
hence i donot want the user to select values in the select box.
how can this be done.readonly tag does not works with selectbox.
Please help.
