Difference between OD & DD

Hi all ,

I have gone through the docs on OD & DD . Need to know what are the differences between them .
Also what are the things that we should consider first before using OD or DD ?

OD and DD used to be separate products entirely. Currently, however, DD is offered as a module to OD. That is, to use DataDeploy, you must go through the OpenDeploy layer.

Functionally, you would use OpenDeploy if you wanted to deploy files. Otherwise, you would use DataDeploy if you wanted to deploy DCR's, XML or raw data into a database.

That's a pretty short summary but that's basically the difference. You can configure a deployment definition to execute OD and DD transactionally. That is, have OD kick off and if successful, invoke a DD definition. If the 2nd step (DD) fails, the 1st step (OD) will roll back. Umm... that's probably my favorite piece of it.

OD deploys file system assets, DD deploys database data. I feel like, if you read through the docs on both, that was probably not what you meant to ask.

what are the things that we should consider first before using OD or DD ?

target and source OS, is there a firewall involved, is there a database involved, are there file system assets involved, do you need DNR capability, where do you want to install the application, will you use the admin UI, how will you maintain log file size, if you use the admin UI who should have access and at what level, should root/system own the process.

These are just a few of things to consider.

Keep in mind that DD isn't really for database synchonization. The manual suggests using your database vendors' tools for sync'ing up.

DD is for deploying dcr content/attributes to either a database or flat file typically.
