I would like to ask opinions and views on whether anyone has done this or whether it is possible.

Using OD 6.0.2 on Unix and TeamSite 6.5 on a Win 2000 box.

I have a job that deploys and XML file to a Unix box. These are standalone filelist deployments. At the same time I execute the deployment from a perl script I run a Data deploy command to add or update a DB with Metadata from this XML file.

This is what I need to happen,

The XML file for is deleted in TeamSite (user removes this as it is old content) I need it to be removed from the DB too. Can I run a Data Deploy config file to remove this from the DB??

Has anyone done anything like this? Can it be done? Does anyone have any useful tips or ideas?

Yes, this can be done.

The easiest way to do this is with DAS (Database Auto Synchornization), which is pretty well-documented in od..ddadmin.pdf.

If you preferred a standalone, however, I'd recommend first disabling the OOTB Delete menu item for your users and replace it with something (could be called the same thing) that kicks off a workflow. Then, you're able to have better auditing. Assuming this, you can construct your filelist for records to be deleted. The rest is documented in the same manual referenced above.

Yes I do prefer a standalone as that how things have been developed in the past and I would prefer to keep in line with that. Really this was an oversight when first developed and wasn't requested. However it is now.. I thought it would be best to kick off another standalone... a kind of reverse of when it is created.

Can I use a file list for deleting DB content? I'll have this file list when it has been deleted you see...any other ideas?

I misspoke earlier. Typically, you would delete the DCR and run DataDeploy to compare everything in the staging area, for instance, against the database. When DD detects that record missing, it will delete it from the database, provided you have doDeletes enabled.

I'm not sure if a filelist deletion can be done. It seems straight-forward but I haven't needed to do that. This would be a huge benefit over having DD iterate through each record to find which one has been deleted.

Otherwise, you could also write straight SQL and pass in the key (or some other identifying attribute) to your query.

Yeah I did think of the SQL option just running a delete command on the key. However I am interested in what you said about doDeletes. I thought this was only for OpenDeploy and didn't realise you could use this for DataDeploy. Rather than pass the directory to compare the contents of the DB, could I not use a filelist, that would be ideal really.

Maybe Sunil will see this post and offer something as to if / how a filelist can be used to delete records with DataDeploy.

Have you tried it ? We do that here without trouble. I have only ever done filelist deployments, for OD and DD. I *think* the doDeletes is always on for DD.

I see what you mean -- maybe that functionality is implied with DataDeploy. I know I haven't needed to explicitly delete a record with DD and I also know that I haven't observed the effect of records being deleted if they don't happen to be in the area where I'm deploying from but then again, I pretty much always point to a specific path rather than an area for performance reasons.

Andy.. How are you deploying? Are you running a DD deployment straight within your OD config?

What we are doing is running a workflow that kicks off a perl script that runs the OD command from a file list. once done the next step in the workflow is to run another perl script that kicks of the DD command using the same file list. This seems to work ok as it has been running for a couple of years now.

I see the house is complete.

The external task runs, sortings files into buckets (JSP, non-JSP, DB). Then we run OD, OD, DD in the same script using the various filelists we created.

Ok, so you are using file list to delete from the DB? What command are you using? can you share your config with me or exaplain how this is done? I cant seem to find anything in the documentation regarding this. An example would be great....

Here is what I need to do just to remind everyone. When a delete takes place in teamsite OD with dodeletes will remove this file from the destination I have a file list deployment to do this.. but then how can i use this file list to delete from DB?

Right just to update... I have tested a filelist deployment to DD and a file list with a deleted file is removed from the DB... Didn't think DD was that clever..
