I had a task to preselect DCR values based on parameters in the URL command. I come up with nearly the same solution like described here:

There is one huge problem though! What if I don't pass in the iw_dtd parameter??? That would mean I get an additional window to pick template type. And even though I send in my param there, it's lost when "newform" link is called to open up the template.

I preset a lot of values for the form when generating the DCR, but this has to be a dynamic preselection ... (preset != preselect)

Any ideas are welcome!

Did you mean iw_tdt parameter from the thread you referenced? If yes and if what you need is DCR's
category/Type you do not have to pass that at all. In FormAPI try something like that:

var dcrType = _iwdcWin.gTDT; // Not Documented
alert(dcrType);

Well ... it's huge ... cause I mean something else ... when you call newform cc you might get 'category picker' page (if you don't specify iw_tdt or if you're not in a templatedata folder). If you send in your own params, in the cc url, after the 'category picker' page they are lost.
When you get the 'category picker' page that is a separate jsp page, which is not forwarding any user specific parameter (additional param that are coming in the Response object). This is said and could be fixed in the JSP itself, but that is a hack ...
