moving from one SQLServer to another

Grettings,

Any advice out there, regarding the best methods of moving MediaBin data from one SQLServer database to another SQLServer database? Let's say we're talking about a good terabyte worth of data.

You copy the entire SQL DB (MBRepository or whatever) over to the new one, create an ODBC connection on the MB Server to the new SQL DB and then change the registry settings on the MB Server to point to the new SQL ODBC.

Should be a quick swith with minimal downtime.

Your SQL Server and MBin application server are not the same box, correct?

We use a third party SQL backup tool called LiteSpeed. We like it because it's super fast and compresses our data ~30% more than the standard SQL backups. http://www.imceda.com.

When we moved servers, we also had to modify the MBSettings table to reflect server name and IP (we use static IPs) to put the change into affect.

Make sure your security groups on the SQL Server match the existing server and you should be good to go.

OK, thank you for the feedback; much appreciated. Seems that the process should be:

1) Have SQL Server and MediaBin installed on the new server.
2) Backup the SQL Server metadata to the server we will store it on.
3) Copy all of the images over to the new server, and store them in the same directory path as on the original machine (only difference being server name in the path, perhaps).
***as the actual images are actually stored in a folder rather than in a database, so seems it would be a matter of copying those, as they would not be inclueded in a database backup.
4) Restore the SQL Server database.
5) Modify the MB and IP settings ( Where exactly? )

0) I'd recommend talking to support too, just to be safe. What works for me may not work for you. (There is my disclaimer.)

1) Okay, that changes a few things. Since SQL Server and MediaBin application are both on the same machine, do you set permissions in MediaBin per the Windows Groups and Users on the machine?

2) Yes.

3) Yes.

4) Do you have any special SQL accounts that need to be recreated? If so, you need to make sure the SQL SID values match up per the master..syslogins table. When install a new version of Windows and SQL, the SID values are commonly regenerated on the fly. If they don't match, you'll need to recreate your logins. Typically, you can script out your permissions on SQL into a file and then just recreate the logins on the new machine.

5) In SQL Server at the [MediaBin Repository].[MBSettings] table you'll find that information. Don't go changing things if you don't know what they mean.

6) Don't forget to adjust where you MBCache location and size. Use the MediaBin Enterprise manager tool to verify all your settings. FYI, this is the interface on how to modify the MBSettings table for most things.

7) Talk to support to be sure. Smiley Wink

Thanks Stacy, I will take note of those.

Regrading your questions about users, I am still finding out information about the project, and how things work at present.

I do know that LDAP is used and we want to make sure that it meets the company's securtiy standards, as well.

I imagein that the users will somehow be imported over, and then maybe we will have to reset their permissions in the MB Enterprise manager, if they have not been carried over in the SQLServer database.

Nothing against you but if you are not too familiar with the MB architecture, I strongly recommend hiring a consultant and contacting IWOV consulting. It should be a short one (2-5 days).

I'm doing a test of moving from one server to another, right now.

Question:

When you install the Asset Server on the computer that the database will be transferred to, ...

at the end of the Asset Server install, do you uncheck the box that says "Start MediaBin Server", so that you can then change the MBSetttings table and ImageDB folder?

Or does it not matter?

Also, once I replace the ImageDB folder with the one I will be using, for what field do I indicate that in the MBSettings table?
