Does MediaBin have a story around importing and exporting metadata in XML format?

Yes. There are two forms.

First, the XML Encoder primitive enables you to retrieve an asset's metadata in a proprietary but simple XML format.

Second, as of 4.5 we have the ability to read metadata in XMP format which is an industry-standard XML-based format introduced by Adobe and is interoperable across a number of formats. As of 4.5.3 you can even customize the mapping of XMP tags to MediaBin metadata fields and specify interoperability even with custom MediaBin metadata to XMP.
