enforcing metadata entry

Can each of the inidiviidual metadata fields be made required fields from the MediaBin tool, or do they need to be enforced from the SQLServer and user interface side?

You can create a task which has metadata adder with run time parameters that you want metadata forced. The users will have to use that task. If they use the default then you wont be able to force metadata. You dont have to do anything to your SQL server.

So, by going into Task / Add Transformer / XML Metadata / and selecting the pencil with the checkmark...

we are requiring that the metadata fields be filled in?

Also, is the point of enforcement when you add an item to a folder?

Yes by using that task the user will be forced to enter metadata. The point of enforcement is the insertion of the asset into MB.
