TeamSite 6.5 and CPUs

I just put my hardware requirement for TeamSite 6.5 together.

And I specified for the CPUs to be at least 3.0 GHz based on interowven document. But I have been told that right now we don’t have anything faster than 4x8 700mhz range machines.. so would that be ok with Teamsite 6.5 or are we going to have to buy new machines with 3.0 GHz CPU for TeamSite 6.5?

If you are bother about the performance then you should go with recomended hardware.

You need to evaluate how many connections you will have. Are you talking UNIX or Windows?

In the Windows Environment CPU is not as important as Disk I/O and Memory. I use blade servers in Production and Virtual Servers for DEV and QA and have not had a problem.

In the end some server is better then no server. If it does not work out very well then you have your business case for new hardware.

yeah we are on windows, and we have about 30 users, the use it mainly to import the files to the local machine to be edited and put back in teamsite.
we have about 10GB of static content.

and we dont have time to wait for new hardware if we want to meet our deadline, and we dont have the budget to get new hardware, since the end of the year...
i guess we just have to go with what we have and see what it is gonna happen.

Based on your usage you should be OK.

Are you planning to use search ? That had better be on another box. Also are there any other apps you were planning to put on there ? MetaTagger ? No way.

As was stated before load up the memory.

BTW, I was not familar with your 4x8 700 MHZ comment. Which is the # of CPUS ? 700 MHZ is still pretty slow.

If you do any sort of workflow processing, your machines will choke. For example, we have a workflow that will do the following:
o set EA's
o submit files
o generate file lists
o deploy content

Each workflow tends to consume one CPU. If we have 10+ workflow running at a time, our box is pretty much pegged. (12 CPU's total).

You mention 2 servers, is one a dev server and the other a prod server ? Or are you planning 2 prod servers ?

2 CPUs 700 MHZ each, should be fine for a dev server. Seems kind of light for a prod server (since my laptop which is 2 years old, has 2 GB and a 3GHZ P4). But your config should work. Doesn't sound like you have much of a choice.

yes two serves. one for pro and one for dev.
this is the issue:
they havent upgraded thier teamsite since couple years or older (5.5.2 SP1).
and they had one person who knew all about how thier teamsite is set up.
and now none of them knows exactly how teamsite works (workflows and all that..) so they hired me to help them with the upgrade. and they dont have big budget since it is the end of the year.
they dont really have alot of stuff, it s nto complex process, it s just that nobody knows what they have or where things are.
i am just doing my best to help them with this. so i have to go around and figure out things myself, where thier workflows and the scripts and all that.
i ll put a copy of the list of workflows they have here int he pro box, and let me know if i can continue with 2 CPUs 700mhz each, or should i put them in the spot and ask for 3.0 GHz.

can you tell me how is TS 6.5 CPU usage compared of TS 5.5.2?

bc right now, TS 5.5.2 is running on the server:
Compaq Dl 380s
intel Pentium III with 1GHZ CPU
4GB
Dual NIC
4-18 Gb internal storage.

and the servers we r gonna install TS 6.5 will be 2 700mhz and 4BG each.

the new teamsite 6.5 will have the same job and configs... so if we need any more CPUs it will be for TS 6.5 as a software to run not for the workflows or other programs.
